School Story:

Was bunking school one afternoon and walking down St Thomas' Road when just before the corner of Essenwood Road Mr Pope appeared around the corner. I then threw myself sideways into the hedge to avoid being seen by him only to be bounced back out into his path. He then demanded to know why i had not removed my basher to him - my reply was 'sorry sir i did not see you'. Well he had a slight smile on his face as he was not the smallest of the teachers at the school at the time. Anyway the smile soon faded as he then frogmarched me back to my class with an instruction to visit "wrinkles" the next morning after assembly. I had hoped to get away with it but was called out at assembly by "wrinkles" to join him in his office for a mandatory 4 cuts - one of many over my time at the school!!

What else have you been up to since 1964?

Qualified as a Quantity Surveyor in 1972 and worked in the profession for a total of 14 years (13 years in Durban and then 1 year in Johannesburg). Left out of extreme boredom (could see my life stretching out ahead of me in a straight line) and joined a civils road building company for a period of three years who transfered me to Johannesburg as their commercial manager. Rejoined the profession after the civils company was bought out and started retrenching staff - decided not to wait to be retrenched! Moved out of the profession and joined a small marble and granite company and then relocated to Cape Town after my divorce in 1987. Joined a building company in 1988 as their commercial director and in 1996 started my own building company which is still running today albiet now in a fairly low key semi retired fashion.

To John's wife and family,

I send my sincere condolances and heartfelt sympathies at the recent passing of John. Despite the sadness you are all feeling at this time, remember to celebrate his amazing life and to rejoice in all the memories of the wonderful and happy times you were all able to share with him over the years. He is now in a happy and peaceful place, welcomed into the arms of his family and friends that have passed before. You will always have his memories and his love towards you all to comfort you as time moves on and you can keep him along with you always in your prayers and quiet times of contemplation thinking of him.

The poem "Immortality" by Clare Harner (1934) always comes to mind at sad times like this -

"Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there, I do not sleep.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there, I did not die."

I remember Trevor well, always with a ready smile and an easy friend. As Don quite correctly said, we are all sadly at that age when more and more of our peers are passing on. May those already passed over rest easily in peace together with their fellow class mates. For those of us still hanging in here we must enjoy our lives to the fullest and appreciate the great memories that we can still cherish of those awesome days when we were young, carefree and spirited at DHS and North Beach. I raise a glass to all of you, wherever you are, and wish you all good health and happy days ahead, cheers!

Hi Richard

Congratulations for your birthday in a few days time.
Long years have passed since our school days but the memories still remain! Not sure if you will recall but you taught me to ride a bicycle - was probably a difficult task but made easier by you telling me if i was to over balance to turn the handlebars into the direction of the impending fall. It worked and i can still ride a bike today - so thanks! Coming up to Durban for a month next week so should try to organise a get together?
Cheers and all the best

Remember Neville very well from our school days - one seriously smooth (looks wise) dude, a really successful ladies man much to our dismay as the rest of us just struggled on trying to impress with smooth talk and little joy! Bumped into him quite by chance in Durban (Elangeni Hotel if i remember correctly) on one of my business trips down from Johannesburg. Had a good chat and laugh about our days at DHS, our buddies there and the teachers we shared some excellent, some strange and a few downright weird.

Rest in peace in the arms of angels and family gone before.
